Boy,
The Olympics in China has opened and it seems EVERYONE is getting married on the 08/08/08. It’s an easy date to remember so husbands that get married on this day won’t forget in the future. Also many wedding businesses have had to take on more staff because of the extra customers for this “special date.”
One thing I have noticed is that the 2008 Olympic ceremony in China has opened on this very special date as well. Why is that? I had to ask this question as to why is this a special time of the year (well of this century actually)? You’ll find out why in just a second.
The Meaning of 888
The number 888 a very prosperous and very good luck number for the Chinese. And I quote from a Chinese translated text:
“888 is to carry a good omen or blessing for prosperity”.
To find out why it’s such a good omen you have to look at the Cantonese language – the southern Chinese dialect that is widely spoken in Hong Kong. The word “eight” is pronounced “faat.” It sounds a lot like the beginning of Cantonese phrase “faat hai,” which means “to earn money.” Cantonese speakers say that coincidence makes 888 about the luckiest trio of digits in Chinese culture.
Essentially “888” means to bring more money, or to have more money.
The China 2008 Olympics, Triple 8, and Weddings
On Friday, on Aug. 8, 2008, at 8:08 p.m. in Beijing, the Olympic Games will begin in China. It’s to kick off the new beginning for the emerging superpower and even the politicians are banking on this prosperous omen (whether they believe in it or not much of China does!)
So what does this have to do with weddings? Well many couples would like to have prosperous lives and are getting married on the 08/08/08. This is supposed to be extremely lucky for their new life together. Is this true? Who knows, but it’s better to try and get as much luck as possible right? It never hurts to have some more luck and money.
Some have even put the number “8” around their wedding cake or as a wedding cake topper!
To all those couples that managed to get married on the 08/08/08 I sincerely hope the best for you in your new lives together. And if you missed out, you can always catch the next special round in 08/08/88 – or 80 years time.
If you missed out on 08/08/08 to get married but would still like to add a little something special, try a custom wedding cake topper or custom figurines for your wedding. Your guests and family will be blown away and you can even keep it as a good luck charm!
